NYFW Report: On Point With Triangles

Either way you look at it, whether right side up or upside down, a triangle is not exactly the most flattering shape when it comes to overall fashion silhouettes. However, in the Spring 2013 collections for New York Fashion Week, it seemed that designers were still determined to incorporate the shape somehow. Therefore, we saw a variety of details which utilized a triangular shape. Whether it was the deep plunging v necks of designers like Helmut Lang and See by Chloe, the triangular corset-like harnesses of BCBG Max Azria, or triangular cutouts as seen in Diane von Furstenburg and Jason Wu, there was definitely no shortage of triangles on the runway. Here are some of our favorite interpretations.

Time and time again, Wu knocks it out of the park. Simultaneously ladylike and edgy, his garments are incredibly well constructed and tailored, not to mention innovative and fresh in their design. If you missed our review of his fall 2012 collection, be sure to check that out also.

The joke around fashion week after the BCBG Max Azria show was “50 Shades of BCBG.” Between the bondage-like harnesses and shoes that were reminiscent of ankle shackles, there were hints of similar themes to 50 Shades of Grey. However, we much prefer the fashionable interpretation to the books themselves. Katie Gallagher’s daring swimwear was cut low on the chest and high on the hips in a dual-triangular shape, creating a long and lean illusion for the body. Unfortunately not many of us real women could rock these silhouettes as well, but it just goes to show that once again triangles are in full force for spring 2013.
