NYFW Report: The LWD

The Little White Dress appears to have replaced the infamous Little Black Dress at New York Fashion week for Spring 2013. Why white? This color is a difficult one. Washing out some skin tones, and a magnet for every speck of dust and dirt that you encounter throughout the day, white seems to be the color for a more high maintenance woman. Not to mention here we are getting excited about an item of clothing that will not exactly be appropriate to wear for the next eight months! Yet white also has a pristine, pureness to it. It is a fresh way to make a statement without being too obvious. For some reason, white brings with it a certain maturity and elegance. In any case, this is just another example of the fashion industry proving that it will remain unpredictable and unexpected, as in the case of the LWD. Below are several of our favorite LWDs from NYFW. All photos via style.com.

If Charlotte had been front and center at the Diane von Furstenberg show there is a pretty good chance she would have just snatched the above LWD right off the model – this is one we would love to be wearing pronto!

Rachel Comey sent 47 looks down the runway; more than most shows. While it began with several white ensembles like the whimsical and fun look pictured above, the collection seemed to lose a bit of cohesion as it got further along, making the LWDs the clear highlights.

Anyone for tennis? This model could not be rocking Richard Chai Love’s sporty LWD any harder- she looks incredible! Pictured is just one of many LWDs he sent down the runway. However,  Charlotte recently discovered while shopping for summer dresses to wear to weddings that this is not a neckline for most people – stay away if you have any sort of chest and/or shoulders.

The entire Kimberly Ovitz show was LWDs with the exception of a few pops of blue and black. With the less-than-extravagent hair and makeup, plus the barefoot models, the under designed dresses felt very minimalistic and fresh.

Erin Fetherston’s girlish vibe was definitely in full force for the Spring 2013 collection which featured among other things lipstick-kiss printed textiles, 17 year old pop star Alexandra McDermott as a lookbook model, and an overall youthful vibe. This LWD is no exception with its sweetheart neckline and sparkly skirt.

Yigal Azrouel’s take on the LWD seemed to be “Little White Riding Hood” in a look that showcased his signature draping designs. While Azrouel is generally one who disregards trends, it appears he did not escape including this one as part of his collection.

Peter Som seemed to need to contrast his LWD with rainbow colored highlighting in hair and makeup. While the styling wasn’t necessarily our favorite, the collection otherwise had several noteworthy pieces.

Katie Gallagher is definitely an up and coming designer to watch. New on the scene after just graduating for RISD in 2010, she created waves with her Spring 2010 collection at NYFW and was receiving personal attention from Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness. Her black and white collection for this season was spot-on, and used an interesting array of all natural fibers including bamboo, kangaroo leather, silk, and lambskin. This finale look is just one of many little white dresses that we loved from Katie Gallagher. Read Charlotte’s full review of the collection for JENESEQUA Style Magazine’s Blog.

Okay, so maybe this one is more of a LONG White Dress than a Little White Dress. However, it is so absolutely breathtaking that it cannot go unnoticed on a post devoted to white dresses! BCBG Max Azria had an amazing collection that was full of a beautiful juxtaposition of hard and soft. Read Charlotte’s full review of the collection for JENESEQUA Style Magazine’s Blog.
